With his family losing all their riches, the movie ends with Lucy Seal working as a waitress. This unfortunate aftermath rings true as Barry’s real-life widow, Deborah Seal, did struggle financially. Based on her 2017 interview with , she and her three children lost all claim to Barry’s million-dollar fortune and went on to lead what is described as a “modest life.” American Made producers did pay her an undisclosed sum for her late husband’s story’s rights.

As for Barry’s death, Deborah continues wondering to this day about the true nature of his assassination. While the official version of the truth is that members of the drug trade shot him down. Deborah told Daily Mail that she continues to wonder if any other parties were involved in her husband’s demise. Several conspiracy theories exist on the internet, claiming that the CIA itself orchestrated Barry’s death. In her chat with Daily Mail, Deborah Seal revealed that she didn’t figure out Barry’s drug-smuggling secrets until he finally became a DEA informant. Instead, she always thought that her late husband was an airplane broker and rented aviation-related lighting equipment for events.
