' second season finished strong with a lot of laughs and a surprising twist, and a third season is on the way for fans of the eponymous televangelist family. While the show's humor and social commentary are always on point, it wouldn't have near the same appeal without such a memorable cast of characters.
RELATED:
The Gemstone family and their colorful associates make for a great ensemble, but this being a show about a fabulously wealthy family, some certainly have more money than others. While all the main characters are surrounded by untold riches, only those at the top can make that cash, and keep it.
Keefe Chambers
Keefe is a loyal and devoted friend to Kelvin, and most charming characters, but he would stick out like a sore thumb among the Gemstone family even without his childlike personality. Other than his path as a Satanist, viewers never get much of a look into his backstory, suggesting that he comes from modest means at best.
What's more, whenever Kelvin suffers or the two are separated, Keefe is totally helpless. For evidence, one need look no further than Keefe's brief return to Satanism in Season 1, or how he ends up caged and abused after Kelvin's "God Squad" take control of the mansion in Season 2.
BJ Barnes
Like Keefe, BJ is a breath of fresh air for being a genuinely nice guy amid a sea of poseurs and jerks, but kindness only gets someone so far in the Gemstones' world. One of the things that makes BJ so sympathetic is knowing that, even through all the verbal abuse he takes from his wife Judy, she's still the only reason he's not a nobody.
RELATED:
Season 2 introduces the audience to BJ's family, who seem to be at least solidly middle class, but that still makes him practically poverty-stricken compared to the clan he's married into. Although, given Judy's hints about hiding extra money away from the rest of the family, the poor guy just might see a boost in net worth in future seasons.
Gideon Gemstone
As Jesse's oldest son, Gideon straddles the line between the series' rich and (relatively) poor. He seems to be a successful stunt performer for his age, able to support himself and live on his own, and it's clear that he sees the Gemstones' lifestyle as inauthentic and wants to go down his own path.
RELATED:
However, Gideon spends much of the first season estranged from his parents, and Season 2 shows that he's still on thin ice when Amber forbids him from moving to Atlanta. So, while he may be back in the Gemstones' good graces after helping take down his grandfather Eli's attackers, Gideon could easily be cut off again if he's not careful.
Baby Billy Freeman
, but that arguably makes him the funniest character, with his shamelessness (and Walton Goggins' excellent performance) providing some of the series' biggest laughs. What's more, even without being a Gemstone proper, he appears to have plenty of money saved up, albeit through questionable means.
Season 2 shows Baby Billy selling an elixir that he claims can cure all sorts of ailments (including COVID), and he had a successful singing career with his sister, Aimee-Leigh. However much Baby Billy complains about his life not turning out the way he wanted, he's obviously an industrious moneymaker whenever he sets his mind to it.
Kelvin Gemstone
As the youngest child in a very wealthy family, Kelvin lives in his own mansion filled with luxuries like vintage arcade machines, but he's used to being the black sheep. Often relegated to uncool youth ministry tasks and kept out of the loop on his older siblings' schemes, it only makes sense that, while still swimming in riches, he can only see tip the of the gold-encrusted iceberg of his family's fortune.
Season 2 gives yet more evidence of Kelvin being kept on a tight leash, money-wise. Having power over the God Squad feeds into his messianic fantasies, but when he demands to take them all on a private jet to the Israeli desert, Eli refuses, suggesting that he trusts his youngest son even less than his more unscrupulous siblings.
Jesse & Amber Gemstone
As the heir apparent (or so he thinks) to the Gemstone mega-church empire, Jesse constantly flaunts his status in the most ostentatious ways possible, and his wife Amber is quite the high-roller herself, albeit with more subtlety. From a back-yard gun range to a massive investment in the Zion's Landing resort, the couple clearly expects to be power players in the world of televangelism once Eli retires.
RELATED:
But Eli's lack of trust in Jesse ensures that he only gets so far, as evidenced by Eli's refusal to loan Jesse $10 million in seed money for Zion's Landing. While the elder son may be a big player and certainly has the creed to always seek more money, fate always finds a way of reminding him that he is not the man on top.
Judy Gemstone
Judy is one of , and her immature and aggressive personality causes her lots of grief with her family. But just because she's dangerously temperamental doesn't mean she's stupid, and the Gemstone's only daughter might just be their richest child.
One clue to Judy's surprisingly vast wealth is her admission that she regularly embezzles money from the church's donations, and has apparently never been caught. Given that women are often beneath suspicion in highly patriarchal settings, plus her criminal behavior, it wouldn't be a shock to find out that Judy's sitting on even more money than she lets on.
Eli Gemstone
As the patriarch of the titular family, it's no surprise that Eli is The Righteous Gemstones' wealthiest main character. A mega-successful megachurch pastor, he worked his way up from a small-time wrestler and mob enforcer through a combination of perseverance, intelligence, and penny-pinching that make him easily one of the most competent characters in the series, and a tough act to follow for the children who hope to succeed him.
What helps Eli massively () is that he's far more level-headed than the Gemstone children, and always has a plan. Before he softened up at the end of Season 1, his ruthless poaching of Pastor Johnny Seasons' flock demonstrates just what someone has to do to make it in this series' world, and shows that he has the competence to follow through on his ambitions.
